The prestigious Peterborough & District Sports Hall of Fame has announced its lineup of inductees for 2024, celebrating the outstanding achievements of local sports figures.
Among this year’s honourees is Fred Blowes, recognized in the Builder category for his remarkable contributions to women’s field lacrosse in Peterborough. Blowes, a prominent figure in the local lacrosse scene since 1987, has played a pivotal role in the development of female lacrosse players. His leadership and coaching prowess have led to numerous provincial honours and international successes, shaping the landscape of lacrosse in the region.
Steve Caban, a multi-sport Special Olympian, is also set to join the Hall of Fame roster. Caban’s journey in sports spans decades, competing at local, national, and international levels in various disciplines. His impressive medal haul and unwavering dedication exemplify the spirit of athleticism and perseverance.
Ray Kerslake, a squash enthusiast and builder, earns his place in the Hall of Fame for his instrumental role in nurturing and promoting the sport of squash in Peterborough. Kerslake’s passion and leadership have been instrumental in the growth of squash in the community, fostering a thriving culture of competition and camaraderie.
Barbara Mervin, a rugby standout, is being recognized for her remarkable journey from local star to international success story. Mervin’s illustrious career as a player and coach, both nationally and internationally, highlights her profound impact on the sport and her enduring commitment to its growth and development.
Anna Panton, a dedicated lawn bowler and influential figure in the sport, earns recognition for her longstanding contributions to the Peterborough Lawn Bowling Club. Panton’s leadership, both on and off the greens, has been pivotal in shaping the club’s success and fostering a vibrant community of lawn bowlers.
Rounding out the esteemed group of inductees is Brent Tully, a hockey standout with an impressive resume spanning junior, professional, and managerial roles, is celebrated for his remarkable achievements both on and off the ice. Tully’s legacy as a player, leader, and mentor continues to resonate within the local hockey community, earning him a well-deserved place in the Hall of Fame.
