Owen Beck will play tonight. That is the word from the Ontario Hockey League this morning as the Peterborough Petes get set to host the Sudbury Wolves at the PMC.
Beck was suspended for two games during game five of last year’s OHL Championship Series, a suspension that was expected to carry over to this season.
The Port Hope native sat out game six of that Championship Series but was then eligible to play in the Memorial Cup due to a ruling by the NHL’s Department of Player Safety who oversees all disciplinary actions during the tournament.
The remaining one game left on his suspension was to carry over to this season but with Beck away at Montreal Canadiens training camp he wasn’t technically with the Petes until the Canadiens reassigned him to Peterborough over the weekend, after the Petes had already played two regular season games.
His suspension was anticipated to conclude with tonight’s game against Sudbury but a representative of the OHL told PtboToday this morning that he is in fact eligible to play, saying “had he been called-up to the NHL on an emergency basis to play mid-season and had to miss games of a suspension as a result, he would be required to come back and serve those – but the parameters seem to be different when said games are carrying over from a previous season”.
That’s good news for the Petes who are looking to improve to 3-0 on the season.
You can listen to all of tonight’s action on Freq 90.5 with coverage beginning just prior to 7pm.
