Twenty years, eight Mann Cups, numerous highlights and countless memories; that’s just a brief summary of the illustrious career of Shawn Evans as a member of the Peterborough Lakers.
That chapter of his storybook career appears to be coming to an end though, with the Lakers announcing this afternoon that Evans has been shipped off to Akwesasne where he’ll suit up with the Senior B Bucks.
Although the team released a statement today stating that Evans had twice asked to be traded since May, the Peterborough native says he still hasn’t been informed by the team, nor did he request to be dealt in the first place, adding that his best memories are with the Lakers.
Evans said the entire situation started when he filed an insurance claim, after getting injured on the carpet during last year’s Mann Cup, something he feels he needed to do to look after himself as he didn’t not know what the outcome would be following surgery.
After the claim came to light with the Lakers, Evans said the board members told him that he wouldn’t be playing in the home opener and he would not be allowed to take part in the banner raising ceremony prior to the game either, something the all-time Mann Cup points leader said really stung, especially since his kids were going to be on the floor during that ceremony, along with their minor lacrosse teams.
His time as a Laker might be over, for now, but Evans said the love for the fans, his teammates and the city of Peterborough will always be in his heart.
