The Under The Lock Fishing Derby returns for a 34th year in late April, with organizers hoping that anglers of all ages take the bait in the form of the numerous cash and product prizes up for grabs.
The weeklong event in the shadow of the Peterborough Lift Lock will kick off with two main events – a youth derby for kids aged 15 and under on April 29th and an all ages derby on April 30th.
David Ryrie, supervisor of outreach programs for the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, the derby’s organizer, says the event’s enduring popularity is based in a couple of factors.
Ryrie notes the big attraction remains hooking onto Walter – one of 3,000 fish the canal will be stocked with.
For the youth derby, 500 fish tagged for prizes such as bicycles and fishing rods, are waiting to be caught. For the all ages derby, 21 fish, each tagged for a $200 prize, will be in the water.
The derby, says Ryrie, checks a lot of boxes in terms of OFAH’s mandate.
A few of the tagged $200 fish, says Ryrie, are waiting to be sponsored. Details can be found at ofah.org/underthelock
