Arguably one of the Peterborough Police Service’s most recognizable members is leaving after 36 years.
Deputy Chief Tim Farquharson will now become the new Chief of Police of the Port Hope Police Service.
In a release, Peterborough’s Police Services Board praised Farquharson for his “dedicated” service – a career that began in 1986 when joined what was then the Peterborough-Lakefield Community Police Service. During the years since, he has held a variety of positions, most recently serving as interim chief pending the hiring and arrival of Chief Stuart Betts.
“Thank you to the Board for instilling confidence in me to lead the Port Hope Police Service, which is steeped in tradition,” states Chief Designate Farquharson. “My commitment is to keep the community safe. To make that happen, it starts with each member of the police service. Humility is knowing I can’t do it alone and I always remember that I need the team more than they need me. I am excited to engage and collaborate with my community partners, HBIA, citizens, sworn and civilian members and the Board. I have been blessed my entire career in policing. I am leaving incredible people and a great police service to start with another great police service that has established positive partnerships with the OPP, Cobourg Police Service and Peterborough Police Service. Leadership is about people, and I look forward to learning from members of the Board, partners, and the community.”
His first day on the job will be March 1st.
A Member of the Order of Merit of Police Services for his role in creating the Peterborough Drug Strategy Task Force, Farquharson, on his own time, has been a tireless advocate for the homeless and those dealing with mental health and addiction challenges. His annual Stand With Tim fundraiser has raised thousands of dollars for the city’s marginalized while increasing awareness of the need for more supports.
