The case for the DBIA hiring of a downtown Peterborough “inclusive street steward” was made before city councillors January 10th during a finance committee meeting.
The three-year position – paying $70,000 annually with the DBIA kicking in $15,000 of that – was approved by the previous council but must now be given the green light to proceed.
DBIA executive director Terry Guiel explains that the individual hired will not only work closely with businesses and social service agencies to help bridge gaps but will also seek out and research potential opportunities.
Guiel is confident that there is someone in the community who is a good fit for a job that will upon a number of skills and expertise.
Guiel admits the position’s creation will take some pressure off his office to address, and find solutions to, matters beyond the DBIA’s scope.
The funding for the position will now be considered as part of city council’s ongoing 2023 budget deliberations.
