A name very familiar to Peterborough residents now has ‘gold medal champion’ attached to it and former Peterborough MP Dean Del Mastro couldn’t be prouder.
The Cavan Monaghan resident took to Facebook following Canada’s thrilling 3-2 overtime win over Czechia to win the World Junior Hockey Championship, lauding the accomplishment of his second cousin, Team Canada defenceman Ethan Del Mastro.
Del Mastro says Ethan’s gold medal is a source of pride for his extended family from the small town of Britt near Parry Sound, noting Ethan’s great uncles, including his father, couldn’t pursue their own hockey dreams because of the pressing need to work and support their family.
Noting that Ethan has been drafted by Blackhawks, Del Mastro isn’t fishing for tickets to a future Chicago game, instead hoping to catch him in action sooner as a member of the junior Mississauga Steelheads.
