The Peterborough Timbermen fell 10-9 to the Whitby Steelhawks on Saturday afternoon at Millbrook Arena. Down 10-4, they shutout the Steelhawks in the last 18:25 of play while scoring five goals in a row to make it close.
Braeden Smith and Justin Bragg led offensively with three goals each, while Riley Curtis scored twice and added three assists.
Special teams were key in the game. Peterborough took 25 minor penalties to Whitby’s 19. Peterborough scored three power play goals and three shorthanded, while seven of Whitby’s goals came on the power play along with two shorthanded.
“I think it was a great game and we could have come out on top early and not even given them a chance to come back from it,” Smith said. “We have to settle on the penalties a little and give the defence a break and get the offensive guys out there so we can shoot some more.”
About 200 fans attended the game, making for a full arena, and it was not unnoticed by the players who saluted the crowd at the final buzzer.
The Timbermen are on the road this coming Saturday, visiting the Toronto Monarchs at the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre in Oakville. They return home to face the Six Nations Snipers on Saturday, January 14 at 2 p.m.
