Town Ward councillor Alex Bierk’s proposal to locate sleeping cabins, or ‘tiny homes’, on a vacant lot in south-end Peterborough goes before his city council colleague tonight.
The site proposed is the former location of the United Canadian Malt plant at Lansdowne and Park streets. The cabins, made by Peterborough Action for Tiny Homes, and supports come with an estimated $100,000 cost to taxpayers and would be in place from early January until the end of April.
In addition, Councillor Bierk is also proposing a new drop-in centre be established at the former Trinity United Church on Reid Street.
In reference to Twitter-expressed push back against the tiny homes proposal from Otonabee Ward councillor Leslay Parnell, who says the property is not zoned for that use, Councillor Bierk pledges to remain in course.
Councillor Bierk admits his motivation to see something done, and done soon, for the homeless is rooted in frustration. He says while there’s a cost attached to both initiatives, that’s not the obstacle.
