The Peterborough Timbermen have made a trio of trades with the Whitby Steelhawks.
Coming to the Timbermen are Peterborough natives Mark Farthing and Dylan Hutchison, as well as Trent Excalibur member Jack MacAlpine.
Whitby receives a 2024 third round pick for MacAlpine, a 2024 fourth round for Farthing and a 10th round pick for Hutchison.
Farthing is a former Peterborough Sr. Lakers defenseman and current head coach of the Trent Excalibur men’s field lacrosse team. He had played four years for Whitby and was their team captain.
“I couldn’t be more excited to make a deal with Whitby to get the playing rights to Mark Farthing,” expressed Timbermen head coach and general manager Joe Sullivan. “Mark is a born leader with an incredible lacrosse IQ. I’m excited to see what he can bring on the floor with his steady, strong play, as well as on the bench in the role of a player coach.”
The Timbermen have made a concerted effort to bring in more local players this season, drafting Darien Jacobs, Morgan Bedlington, and Scott Arsenault, re-signing Parker Sands who took last season off, and trading for recent Mann Cup champion Taite Cattoni, who also plays at Trent for Farthing.
The Timbermen are still in the process of recruiting more local players for the season.
“We have tried hard to surround ourselves with successful players and Mark Farthing has always been a winner,” Sullivan said. “He may find himself playing alongside many of the players he’s coached the last few years as we have tried to get more local players on our roster, including Hutchison, Cattoni and Riley Curtis, as well.”
Dylan Hutchison is one of Farthing’s assistant coaches at Trent. He spent time with the NLL’s Panther City Lacrosse Club last year, appearing in 14 of the team’s 18 games, and is currently on their practice roster. A defenseman, Hutchison played three seasons with the Steelhawks before making the jump to the NLL. He is also a member of the MSL’s Cobourg Kodiaks.
Jack MacAlpine is a forward who has spent the past two summer seasons with his hometown Oakville Buzz, scoring 10 goals and 11 assists in 12 games. In eight games with the Steelhawks last season, he scored three times and added 12 assists. He is in his second year at Trent.
The Timbermen hosted their first training camp session on the weekend at Millbrook Arena. Training camp continues on Saturday, December 3 and Saturday, December 10. The season opener is quickly approaching; Peterborough opens on the road Friday, December 16 at Brampton’s Memorial Arena vs the Express. The Timbermen’s home opener is set for Saturday, December 31 at 1 p.m. at Millbrook Arena.
