A Millennium Park gathering space created in 2019 is about to have a dramatic new addition.
Gathering, a new public artwork created by Anishinaabe sculptor Michael Belmore, will be dedicated November 10th at 1 p.m. next to the Trans-Canada Trail near the south end of Water Street.
The gathering space it will call home was created out of The Nogojiwanong Project, a collaboration involving local First Nations, Indigenous peoples and the City of Peterborough in recognition of Rice Lake Treaty Number 20. The space encourages learning and reflection via a series of interpretative panels that highlight the evolution of local treaties and Indigenous peoples’ inherent rights.
The unveiling coincides with Treaties Recognition Week that recognizes the significance of treaty rights and relationships, and their enduring relevance.
