Peterborough musician Irish Millie – Amelia Shadgett when she’s not playing the fiddle – is heading to the Canadian Folk Music Awards presentation as a nominee for a second consecutive year.
The 15-year-old Lakefield College student was nominated in 2022 as Young Performer of the Year based on the release of her debut album Thirteen. Now she’s nominated for the same award in 2023, along with sisters Fern and Willow Marwood, for their trio The Receivers. Shadgett says their nomination follows their having met for the first time at last year’s awards.
Folk music, says Shadgett, not only has an enduring appeal for audiences but also allows her to spread her wings creatively.
While she loves performing, Shadgett says writing music brings her equal joy.
The 2023 Canadian Folk Music Awards will be presented next spring in Vancouver and, yes, Shadgett will be there, fingers well crossed.
