Amid the backdrop of the historic pageantry that has jointly mourned the loss of Queen Elizabeth II and heralded the accession of King Charles III, Canadians are rethinking how they view the monarchy and its relevance in a changing world.
Dr. Heather Nicol, the director of the School for the Study of Canada at Trent University, says such re-evaluation is timely and healthy.
Dr. Nicol doesn’t see a dramatic change coming in how the monarchy views Canada’s place amongst the realm of nations it oversees.
Regardless of individual Canadians’ views on the monarchy’s relevancy to Canada, Dr. Nicol feels that most share a respect for its endurance and the loss of a reign that we’ll never see again.
