While this municipal election campaign doesn’t mark Henry Clarke’s first rodeo, the longtime Monaghan Ward councillor is excited to be making his first bid for the mayor’s chair.
Clarke, who was first elected to council in 1998 and was subsequently re-elected five times, worked full-time at Quaker Oats until his retirement in 2019. Now his plate is clear for the rigors of campaigning for mayor and he’s taking full advantage.
Clarke says taxes, homelessness and “the state of the downtown” top the list of concerns he’s hearing from those he meets. As one of two current sitting members of council running for mayor, he says he’s well positioned to lead the discussion on those issues and others.
An election campaign veteran, Clarke acknowledges there are long days involved but one takeaway stands out for him now as much as it ever has.
Clarke says the weeks leading up to the October 24th election will see a series of policy statements rolled out by his campaign. He’ll also prepare for candidates debates and log countless steps in a bid “to meet more and more people.”
Running against Clarke for Mayor are: Jeff Leal, Victor Kreuz, Brian Lumsden and Stephen Wright.
