This summer’s high heat heightens the risk of contracting West Nile Virus.
The types of mosquitos that thrive in this weather can acquire the disease increasing the chance of human exposure to infection.
Experts say when venturing into areas where mosquitos are plentiful, cover up as much as possible. Wear light coloured clothing which is less attractive to mosquitos and correctly apply an approved insect repellent.
Since the start of trapping this year, public health staff have collected more than 6,000 mosquitoes for testing. So far not one mosquito has tested positive for West Nile.
The last human case of West Nile in Peterborough region was confirmed two years ago.
