Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the New Canadians Centre has helped out about 90 people fleeing the situation here in Peterborough.
In early April, in the absence of government support programs for displaced Ukrainians, the community raised over $30,000 for the NCC’s Client Emergency Fund to meet the most urgent needs of their clients. All the funds raised have been disbursed.
Andy Cragg says all levels of government have stepped up to assist through various programs since then, however it is still a very tough situation for newcomers.
Cragg adds the language barrier is a real hurdle to get over for many.
Everyone is invited to welcome our newest residents at the Zabava-Ukrainian Community Picnic at King Edward Park starting at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
