The Electric City Men’s and Women’s sides picked up maximum points on Saturday thanks to braces from Marissa Oliveira, Jordan Webb, and Jordan Brown.
The Electric City FC Women’s side gave their home fans a great send-off, defeating BVB IA Waterloo 4-0 in their final home match of the season. Buoyed by Midfielder Marissa Olivera’s brace, ECFC (10-6-2) continued to flex their offensive prowess, on route to their 10th victory of the season.
Oliveira opened the scoring in the 11th minute for ECFC. After evading a defender and creating shooting space, Oliveira fired it into the top right-hand corner for her 5th goal of the season. Kayla McQueen extended ECFC’s lead in the 64th minute when she converted on a penalty kick, after being taken down in the box. The lead grew to 3-0 after Brynn Jurus brushed off a defender and went on a solo rush to the net, beating the keeper in the bottom right corner. Oliveira’s second goal of the game, in the 84th minute, put a bow on ECFC’s dominant performance. Oliveira said after the match that having so many threats on their offence helps her find space to work.
“I work well with big pockets of space of course, so I think that worked a lot with Kayla being such a big threat and Kayla holding the backline, it really helped me out a lot.”
ECFC Assistant Coach Ron Clarke said that while there were lots of contributions from everyone on their roster on Saturday, Oliveira’s game really stood out.
“Marissa scoring the two goals that she did, were fantastic. A lot of players did a lot of great work, but Marissa with the two goals was one of the best players on the field.”
After playing in front of the home crowd for the final time this regular season, Oliveira was grateful for the support the club has seen from the local fan base in ECFC’s inaugural season.
“It means a lot honestly. Coming from London, when we played, we had a great fanbase, teams hated coming to play us and I feel the same way here. Every time teams come here, they should be not only scared, but also worried that our fanbase is behind us and I have honestly never seen a bigger fanbase in this league than Peterborough. I love it.”
Even with Saturday’s victory ECFC finds themselves in a very tenuous position in terms of a potential post season berth. ECFC sits in 7th place, trailing North Toronto by two points and needs some help, considering North Toronto has a game at hand.
Coach Clarke says that if ECFC does reach the postseason, they could be a dangerous team to play.
“We have to keep our fingers crossed that things fall our way. If we make the playoffs, we will be a very dangerous team. I think we started to gel the last few games and definitely the firepower has shown, scoring a lot of goals. If we do get into the playoffs, let the teams know, watch out we are coming.”
ECFC heads to Vaughn next Sunday for their regular season finale, where they will face a second place Vaughn Azzurri squad that sits with a 13-1-3 record and has already clinched a playoff position. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm.
The Electric City FC Men’s side picked up their first road victory of the season on Saturday, defeating North Mississauga SC 4-1. Jordan Brown and Jordan Webb put on quite the show, each finding the back of the net twice.
ECFC (7-5-3) did not wait long to get on the board as Webb opened the scoring in the 7th minute and Brown extended the lead to 2-0 in the 12th minute. Brown potted his second goal of the game and 11th of the season just before halftime in the 40th minute, as ECFC entered halftime with a 3-0 lead for the second consecutive match. The lead grew to 4 in the 72nd minute when Webb scored his second goal of the game and third of the season. ECFC conceded a goal in added time for the second consecutive game, although this time it was far less consequential than the tying goal conceded to Burlington on Wednesday night. Jordan Brown said that while there are a lot of positives to take away from Saturdays win, the team was disappointed to concede a goal in the games dying moments.
“First win on the road is a positive, first time we have scored 4 goals, that is a positive, but I would say as a team we were disappointed to concede in the final minutes. If we want to compete against the better teams, like the games we have coming up ahead away from home as an example, you cannot slip up. We take positives but the job is not done, we are still pushing for playoffs, and we know we can do even better.”
After picking up 4 of a possible 6 points this week, ECFC drew closer to the pack as they try to hunt down a playoff berth. ECFC finds themselves 5 points out of a playoff spot with 6 matches remaining. Brown said that with the team finally getting their first road win they must focus on controlling what they can control and let the chips fall where they may through the final 6 matches.
“Going forward, at-least it breaks that voodoo of not winning on the road, we have proved we can do it and we know what games we need to play, 4 games at home and 2 away, so it is in our hands now and we just have to win out a I guarantee other teams will drop points and we will be in the playoffs”.
ECFC prepares to host Simcoe County Rovers (10-3-3) in the second leg of the Trent-Severn Cup next Saturday. Both teams enter the match on equal footing after the ECFC Women’s side drew Simcoe County 1-1 in the first leg on June 15th.
