June is Seniors Month and local fitness professional Alec Dewdney inspires local seniors to stay fit and active and that it is never too late to start. Look at him, he’s in his 80s.
Originally from England, Alec started his fitness career in his late 60’s. His wife had MS and he knew that he had to become more fit, so that he could be the best caregiver for her as her physical abilities changed.
“I had to improve my own strength to be able to help her and that lead to an entirely new career for me and now I love helping others,” said Alec. “I turned 81 this past April and I am living proof that fitness training works, even when you start later in life.”
Inspired by a class that he took at the local YMCA, he received his Can Fit Pro designation in 2008 and Yoga Fit certification in 2009.
He continues to operate his own business, Fitness for Grown-Ups, and there he uses his training skills to offer one-on-one sessions with clients, helping them to meet goals for health and fitness. He focuses his session on mobility and strength: two essentials for healthy living.
“I also believe that weight and resistance training is essential to maintain not only our physical health but our mental health too.”
Along with his own individual training business he also leads a vigorous, weekly Kettle bell workout at the Campbellford Curling Club and four (2 in-person and 2 by Zoom) weekly chair yoga classes for people who have restrictions in their mobility through Community Care Northumberland. These classes use his adapted strength training techniques.
“It’s never too late to start and any movement can be adapted to your particular body situation,” added Alec. “Start slow but just get started and you will notice a difference.”
