Rock ‘n’ roll original Ronnie Hawkins has died at the age of 87.
The musical icon was born in Arkansas and came to Canada in the late 1950’s and helped nurture a generation of young musicians, including Robbie Robertson of The Band. Hawkins died at home yesterday.
As he was being honoured by the Canadian Walk of Fame in October 2002, Hawkins reminisced about the musical scene, noting he watched the Canadian rock world being born.
Throughout his career, Hawkins wrote roughly 500 songs and received numerous accolades and awards including being named to the Order of Canada in 2014.
