The past 28 hours have been very hectic in the community, as everyone reacts to yesterday’s storm.
We spoke with Sandra Dueck, Communications Coordinator with Peterborough Police Service, who says the last day or so has been very busy. As we continue to get through this, she says they are sharing the message to stay away from the downed wires and trees, as they can still be very unsafe.
They are encouraging everyone to use 911 only for an emergency, so they can make it to those emergencies. Their non-emergency line is working, and can be reached by calling 705-876-1122
Another reminder Dueck wants to share is that as power returns, if you approach an intersection that has no power, to please treat it as a four-way stop.
Inspector Neil Collins says they recognize when an incident like this first comes about, that there’s a real sense of panic in the community.
Acting Chief Tim Farquharson said the biggest piece of this is the incredible work of the communications department, and the great work the communicators and dispatchers have done in the past day. He went on to give a shoutout as well to the emergency coordinators, all of the city staff and elected officials who have stepped up. Another big shoutout to transit operators, to public health workers, social services, and to the community.
Farquharson also compares this storm to the 2003 blackout, in saying this was similar but the scariest for everybody.
