A local high school teacher is sleeping in his backyard next week, all to raise awareness and money for the YES Shelter for Youth and Families.
Aaron McFadden, a Grade 10 math and history teacher at Holy Cross, says helping shelters is important given the struggles so many in our community face.
McFadden says learning about the issues surrounding homelessness and what leads to it is important for a lot of reasons.
He says it’s an issue that hits home for a lot of people, and that it may impact someone you know, even if you don’t know it.
In 2021, he did the sleep out in lieu of a winter camping trip he had planned, however there was no school to attend to teach because of virtual learning caused by COVID-19. This year, McFadden will be sleeping in his backyard from 7:00pm to 7:00am February 13th to 20th, which was the coldest week of the year last year. He will be doing this while still attending school as a teacher and helping with his family during the day.
