The topic of race and the question of “what actually constitutes racism” has been front and centre in 2020.
Protests and rallies have been held all over the world in the aftermath of the death of George Floyd in Minnesota at the hands of a white police officer. Peterborough’s chapter of ‘Black Lives Matter’ has not stood by quietly and has spoken out about issues facing people of colour in our community.
One of the leading voices is Charmaine Magumbe. Charmaine was raised the Junction area of Toronto, a mostly white neighbourhood and culture.
After moving to Sudbury for university, she left to live in Zimbabwe for several years before returning to Canada. Charmaine moved to our area back in 2004 after her then-husband found a job in Lakefield.
During her time here, she has become a well-known member of the community. In addition to her roles with Black Lives Matter and the Community Race Relations Committee of Peterborough, Charmaine has run for City Council and also helps run events to fight the growing opioid crisis for PTBO Strong.
