It’s not perfect, but it’s a step.
That was the message from Peterborough mayor Diane Therrien last night during an emergency council meeting, where it was decided to open shelter beds in the Peterborough Public Library lower-level auditorium.
Therrien says this is best move considering the lack of options.
Therrien says the city won’t be kicking anyone out of the so-called ‘Tent City’ until there’s some place to go, but hopes the newly opened spaces will help some tenants leave and get shelter. She adds so far they haven’t been able to find a property owner willing to become a partner.
Councillor Stephen Wright says this is a temporary measure because it’s important that the so-called ‘Tent City’ be removed and the parks returned to the public.
In addition to the 15 new beds at the library, there are also 15 more at the YES Shelter and six at Cameron House shelter for women.
