The Salvation Army in Peterborough is heading into its annual Christmas fundraising campaign facing significant financial pressure after falling $88,000 short of its previous fundraising goal.
The organization raised $582,000 of the $670,000 needed to support its services in 2026, forcing staff to stretch resources while responding to growing community needs.
Now, as it prepares to launch its Hope for All Seasons Christmas Appeal, the Salvation Army is setting a new fundraising target of $675,000 to help fund its programs in 2027.
Major Naomi Dalley, supervisor of the organization’s social services program, says the shortfall has made the past year particularly challenging.
“We had to find creative solutions to ensure everyone received something,” said Dalley. “It has been a hard year.”
The Salvation Army provides a range of services to Peterborough residents experiencing financial hardship, food insecurity and other challenges.
By the end of 2026, its Breakfast Program alone is expected to have served approximately 26,000 meals.
Dalley says the temporary closure of a local shelter also increased demand, as some individuals turned to the Salvation Army for additional assistance.
Although repairs have been completed and the shelter has reopened, the organization continues to feel the financial impact.
“Whenever a local resource centre experiences a setback, we experience part of the ripple effect,” Dalley said.
The organization’s programs include a food bank, emergency assistance with rent, utilities and medical expenses, budgeting support and services for people reintegrating into the community after leaving correctional institutions.
Its Christmas Assistance Program also provides grocery cards to individuals and families, along with toys for children.
Unlike some seasonal fundraising efforts, the Salvation Army’s Christmas campaign determines the funding available for services throughout the following year.
That makes reaching the $675,000 target particularly important.
“The $88,000 shortfall hit hard, and we still have a couple of months to go,” Dalley said.
“Every donation helps us continue providing essential services to people who need them.”
Christmas kettles will begin appearing at locations throughout Peterborough on November 12.
A kettle will also be available during the Peterborough Petes’ Teddy Bear Toss game on December 10.
Donations can be made using cash or coins, debit or credit cards through Tip-Tap machines, or online using QR codes displayed at the kettles.
Residents can also contribute through the following options:
-
Online: salvationarmyptbo.org
-
In person or by mail: 219 Simcoe St., Peterborough
-
By phone: 705-742-4391, ext. 6
Dalley says the hope is that community support will help the organization overcome last year’s shortfall and continue meeting the needs of Peterborough residents.
