Peterborough’s proposed $170-million Multi-Use Sport and Event Centre remains a major infrastructure project under consideration, but incoming mayor Michael Eamon believes the city needs a clearer financial picture and more public input before moving forward.
The proposed facility would replace the 70-year-old Peterborough Memorial Centre with a modern, 5,800-seat venue capable of hosting hockey, concerts, sporting competitions and major community events.
The 155,000-square-foot building would be located at the existing municipal bus garage property on Townsend Street, which city council has approved as the preferred location.
While Eamon supports the concept of a new facility, he has expressed reservations about the financial approach advanced by council.
Eamon spoke about the issue with PTBOTODAY.ca.
In May 2026, city council approved a motion committing Peterborough to covering approximately one-third of the project’s estimated cost, or $57 million.
The remaining $114 million would need to be secured through other sources, potentially including provincial and federal funding, Peterborough County, private-sector partnerships, fundraising and sponsorships.
Council also pre-committed $1.7 million in the proposed 2027 budget for project management, site studies and preliminary consulting work.
