A longtime fixture in downtown Peterborough is preparing to serve its final meals, bringing nearly half a century of family history and community memories to a close.
The Souvlaki Pit, formerly known as Ace Submarine, has announced it will permanently close on Saturday, November 14.
Located at the corner of George and Rink streets, the family-owned restaurant has served generations of Peterborough residents.
In an emotional farewell message shared with customers, the family reflected on the restaurant’s history and the relationships built over decades of serving the community.
“Writing these words is incredibly difficult,” the family said.
“For decades, this restaurant has been a part of our family’s life. We spent long days and late nights here. We watched our children and grandchildren grow up and eventually stand beside us behind the counter, day in and day out.”
The family said the restaurant became much more than a place to grab a meal.
“As we look back, what stands out most isn’t the food. It’s the people.”
The restaurant began as Ace Submarine under Patricia and Aris, whose dedication helped establish the business as a gathering place for local families.
Over the years, it became known as the Souvlaki Pit, maintaining its connection to the community through generations of customers and staff.
The family also paid tribute to Patricia, affectionately known as Pat, who has since died.
“We miss Pat dearly and wish she could be here to see how many lives were touched by what she and Aris started,” the statement said.
The family credited the restaurant’s longevity to the loyalty of customers, the dedication of employees and the relationships built over the years.
Many customers, they noted, have been visiting for generations, sharing family milestones and creating memories along the way.
With the final day of service approaching, the family is encouraging longtime customers and friends to stop by before the doors close.
“Before we close our doors, we hope you’ll stop by one last time. We’d love the opportunity to see you, share a memory, and thank you in person.”
The farewell message concluded with a heartfelt tribute to the community.
“It has been an honour to serve you. We will miss this restaurant. More importantly, we will miss you”.
