A potential strike involving Peterborough County paramedics has been delayed by nearly two weeks following a decision by the Ontario Labour Relations Board.
Paramedics represented by CUPE Local 4911 cannot legally begin strike action before 6:30 a.m. on November 13, according to an update from Peterborough County.
The previous strike deadline had been set for 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, October 31.
The extension comes as the County and union continue discussions over an essential ambulance services agreement, which is required under Ontario law before paramedics can take strike action.
The agreement determines how many paramedics and ambulances must remain on duty during a labour disruption to ensure emergency medical services continue operating.
According to the County, the two sides disagree over the status of an agreement dating back to 2017, which is now the subject of proceedings before the Ontario Labour Relations Board.
The additional time will allow both parties to negotiate an updated essential ambulance services agreement.
If they cannot reach an agreement, the Labour Board will make a determination.
Peterborough County is reassuring residents that paramedic services remain fully operational and that people experiencing medical emergencies should continue calling 911.
