The Douro Community Centre has officially celebrated the grand reopening of its ice surface following one of the largest investments in the facility since it was built in 1981.
The Township of Douro-Dummer marked the occasion on Saturday, with a community celebration featuring free public skating, food and activities for local families.
The event marked the completion of an extensive renovation project that began April 3.
The arena welcomed its first rental groups back onto the ice on October 9, following more than six months of construction.
While replacing the ice surface was the centrepiece of the project, the improvements extended throughout the facility.
Upgrades included a new ice surface with an updated orientation, replacement boards, glass and protective netting, new rubber matting, LED lighting, exterior doors and an updated audio system.
Crews also painted interior walls, structural beams and seating areas, constructed a new changing area and replaced the arena’s ammonia chiller.
Mayor Heather Watson described the project as an important investment in the township’s recreational infrastructure.
“This has been a significant undertaking for the Township and an important investment in the future of the Douro Community Centre,” Watson said.
“As the largest investment in the facility since it was built, these improvements will substantially extend its lifespan and enhance the experience for everyone who uses it.”
Peterborough-Kawartha MPP Dave Smith also welcomed the completion of the renovations, saying the modernized facility will benefit athletes, families and residents for decades.
The project received funding support through the Ontario government’s Community Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Fund.
The township also acknowledged contributions from Douro Minor Hockey, contractors, tradespeople and community partners who helped complete the work.
Saturday’s celebration included remarks from local representatives and Douro Minor Hockey, along with free public skating on the renovated ice.
Visitors were also treated to a community barbecue provided by Enbridge Gas, hot chocolate courtesy of Douro Minor Hockey, cookies from Brioche Bakery and Halloween treats from the township’s Recreation Facilities Department.
The township says the improvements will help extend the life of the Douro Community Centre while ensuring it remains an important gathering place for residents and community organizations.
