A 31-year-old Courtice man is facing multiple charges after allegedly refusing to stop for police while travelling at more than twice the posted speed limit before crashing into a ditch in Douro-Dummer Township.
Peterborough County OPP say the incident happened shortly before 7 a.m. on Thursday, October 29, while an officer was conducting speed enforcement along County Road 4.
Police say the officer spotted a westbound vehicle travelling at more than double the posted speed limit and attempted to conduct a traffic stop.
However, the driver allegedly refused to pull over.
According to investigators, the officer discontinued the attempted stop after observing the vehicle cross into the oncoming lane of traffic, pulling to the side of the road for public safety reasons.
Moments later, the same vehicle turned southbound onto Television Road, where the driver lost control.
The vehicle left the roadway and came to rest in a ditch.
Officers arrived at the scene and arrested the driver, who was not injured in the crash.
The accused has been charged under the Criminal Code with dangerous operation and flight from a peace officer.
He also faces stunt driving and speeding charges under the Highway Traffic Act.
As a result, Watson received a 30-day driver’s licence suspension, while the vehicle was impounded for 14 days.
The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Peterborough on December 29.
