With daylight saving time coming to an end this weekend, Peterborough Fire Services is again urging residents to check the working order of their smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
Public education officer Amanda Dears says it takes but a few minutes to ensure your detectors are functional, but it’s a few minutes that may save you and yours from serious injury or worse in the event of a fire or carbon monoxide leak.
Dears adds having working alarms in place isn’t enough on its own, noting it’s vital that each smoke, carbon monoxide or combination alarm be of a reliable make.
With Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week beginning Sunday (November 1), Dears says it’s a particularly good time to be fully aware of, and fully prepared for, what is termed “the silent killer.”
Dears says the emergence and growing use of lithium ion batteries has prompted additional safety messaging.
Dears adds having an escape plan, and ensuring all know what that plan is, will save valuable seconds in the event of a fire or carbon monoxide leak.
