Patio season is coming to an end in downtown Peterborough, with the city preparing to remove temporary outdoor dining spaces ahead of winter.
Starting Monday, November 2, crews will begin removing expanded patios from city-owned property, including sidewalks and on-street parking spaces.
Restaurants and other businesses operating temporary patios are being asked to remove all furniture by the end of the day Sunday, November 1.
The changes will allow the city to prepare sidewalks and roadways for winter snow clearing operations.
The removal will also mean a return to normal traffic conditions along a busy stretch of Hunter Street West. Since May, Hunter Street West between George Street North and Aylmer Street has operated as a one-lane, one-way street to accommodate additional outdoor dining and pedestrian space in the downtown café district.
Once the temporary patio areas are removed, that section of Hunter Street West will return to two lanes of two-way traffic.
The expanded patio program has become a familiar part of Peterborough’s downtown summer experience.
This year marked the seventh summer the city has introduced temporary changes to public spaces to create more room for patios and pedestrians.
