More than 73,000 Peterborough residents are registered to vote in the upcoming municipal election, with voter turnout once again expected to be a key measure of public engagement.
According to election figures, 73,836 eligible electors are registered for the municipal and school board election, an increase of 8,133 from the 2022 election.
Four years ago, 26,377 residents cast ballots out of 65,703 registered voters, resulting in an official turnout of 40.15 per cent. That represented a decline of 8.16 percentage points from the 48.31 per cent turnout recorded in 2018.
Peterborough’s municipal government consists of an 11-member council, including one mayor elected citywide and 10 councillors representing five geographic wards. Each ward elects two councillors, meaning voters can select up to two candidates for council in their respective ward.
The city’s five wards are Otonabee, covering the south end; Monaghan in the west; Town, which includes the downtown core; Ashburnham, commonly known as East City; and Northcrest in the north.
