For weeks, Peterborough and the Kawarthas had one question on their minds: Who is the 96.7 WOW FM $10,000 Fugitive? Now that the mystery has been solved, the man behind the promotion is reflecting on what happened when an entire community was given a reason to become a detective.
Rob Mise, Vice-President of Content at My Broadcasting Corporation, helped oversee the contest, which challenged listeners to track down a mystery individual using clues broadcast on 96.7 WOW FM.
But beyond the prize, the promotion also became something of a social experiment. How closely would people pay attention to their surroundings? How quickly would information spread? And what would happen when thousands of listeners started wondering whether the person standing next to them might be worth $10,000?
Mise joined ‘WOW Mornings with Bill Porter’ on Wednesday to give more of his perspective.
The mystery came to an end Saturday, October 17, when Erika Mark successfully identified the fugitive outside Sobeys on Towerhill Road.
For Mise, the promotion offered a look at how a shared mystery could capture the attention of a community, extending conversations beyond the radio and into everyday life.
