The federal government is providing nearly $6.6 million to 10 businesses and organizations in Eastern Ontario, including a Peterborough-based metal supplier.
The funding was announced Wednesday by Peterborough MP Emma Harrison on behalf of Evan Solomon, Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation and the minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario).
The funding will support projects focused on adopting new technologies, increasing production, strengthening supply chains and expanding into new markets.
Kawartha Metals Corp., founded in Peterborough in 1994, is receiving $500,000 toward a $1-million project to expand its advanced steel processing capabilities through specialized equipment. The company supplies steel, aluminum, brass and plastic materials to customers in the construction, manufacturing and retail sectors.
Other recipients include CABN Co. Ltd., Continental Conveyor Ltd., EDF Race Shop, Grayler Metals Corp., Merit Precision Ltd., Scapa Tapes North America ULC, Soluroc Cobourg Inc., Thunderbird Farm and ZipGrow Inc.
The announcement follows a federal funding package announced August 25 that included $1.5 billion for the Regional Tariff Response Initiative. The initiative is intended to help Canadian businesses respond to tariffs by improving productivity, strengthening supply chains and diversifying markets.
Kawartha Metals founder and owner Tom Elliott’s son, Matthew, said the project is expected to reduce production costs and help the company’s manufacturing customers improve efficiency and competitiveness.
Harrison said the funding will support businesses and organizations in the Peterborough area.
