Children and youth attending programs at the YMCA’s Balsillie Family Branch in Peterborough have new places to play, thanks to funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation.
The YMCA of Central East Ontario has announced the completion of two outdoor play and sports court spaces designed to support summer camps, recreational programs and youth activities.
The new facilities feature sports court markings, equipment for multiple activities, secure fencing and shade structures to provide protection from the sun.
According to the YMCA, hundreds of children and youth have already used the spaces for team sports, games and other outdoor activities.
Balsillie Family Branch General Manager MaryAnne Wooldridge says the project has made a noticeable difference for young participants.
“These new outdoor spaces have already had a tremendous impact on our campers and program participants,” said Wooldridge.
“They provide safe, inclusive places where children and youth can stay active, build friendships, and develop lifelong healthy habits.”
The YMCA says the improvements will help expand recreational programming while encouraging physical activity, teamwork, confidence and social connections among participants.
To celebrate the project’s completion, the organization is hosting a funding recognition event on Wednesday, October 21, from 4 to 5:30 p.m., at the Balsillie Family Branch.
Peterborough-Kawartha MPP Dave Smith, YMCA of Central East Ontario President and CEO David Allen, and representatives from the Ontario Trillium Foundation are expected to attend.
The celebration will recognize the funding partnership and highlight how the new outdoor facilities are benefiting local children and families.
