Local basketball rivalries will take centre court this week as Fleming College brings back its Phoenix Cup for a second edition.
Following the success of the inaugural event in February, the competition returns Wednesday, October 14, at the Peterborough Sport & Wellness Centre, featuring high school matchups and Fleming College varsity basketball.
The event gets underway at 3 p.m. when the senior girls’ basketball teams from Crestwood Secondary School and St. Peter Catholic Secondary School face off.
The rivalry continues at 4:30 p.m., with the junior girls’ teams from the same schools taking the court.
The afternoon will conclude with a Fleming Phoenix men’s varsity basketball scrimmage at 6:15 p.m., giving fans an opportunity to see the team in action ahead of its regular season opener on Saturday, October 24.
Fleming says the Phoenix Cup is designed to bring the community together through sport while showcasing local high school and college basketball talent.
The event also reflects the college’s efforts to strengthen relationships with area high schools and sports organizations.
Organizers say future Phoenix Cup events are expected to expand beyond basketball, featuring competitions in multiple sports.
Community members and basketball fans are invited to attend Wednesday’s event at the Peterborough Sport & Wellness Centre.
