Peterborough mayoral candidate Rob Hailman has suspended his campaign, although his name will remain on the ballot for the October 26 municipal election.
Hailman announced Sunday evening that he is ending active campaigning effective immediately. He remains a certified candidate for mayor.
“While I am no longer campaigning, I remain a candidate and my name will appear on your ballot,” Hailman said. “I encourage you to vote your conscience in this election, in whatever way you choose.”
Hailman said he plans to honour commitments already made, including participating in scheduled debates, but will otherwise conduct no further campaign activities.
In a longer statement announcing his decision, Hailman said balancing the campaign with two jobs had affected his ability to campaign and meet his existing work and community commitments.
He said he intends to continue advocating on issues facing Peterborough outside of elected office.
“It is clear to me that this, not elected office, is the best means for me to bring about the change I believe Peterborough needs,” Hailman said.
The city’s certified candidate list currently shows Hailman alongside Neil Morton, Keith Riel, Michael Eamon, Rebecca Schillemat, Brian Lumsden and Jacob Méthot in the race for mayor.
Hailman spoke with PTBOTODAY.ca’s Paul Rellinger on Monday morning.
