Heavy vehicles will continue to face temporary weight restrictions on a portion of Television Road in Peterborough after council formally approved the limits.
The restrictions apply to the Television Road bridge over Meade Creek, where an assessment identified deterioration in the bridge’s support beams.
The maximum permitted gross vehicle weight is nine tonnes for a single vehicle unit, 17 tonnes for a two-vehicle unit and 23 tonnes for a three-vehicle unit.
The restrictions were initially put in place on August 4, with advisory signs installed in the area. The newly approved bylaw formalizes those limits until short-term repairs to the bridge are completed.
The bridge is already scheduled for replacement, with construction expected to begin in 2027. The Television Road bridge replacement is included among the city’s bridge capital projects.
During construction of the replacement, the city intends to keep the existing bridge open to regular traffic and construction vehicles.
The city has been planning the replacement for several years. Earlier planning recommended replacing the aging structure with a new two-lane bridge, with provisions to accommodate a potential future widening to four lanes.
