The Peterborough Petes will celebrate Indigenous culture and community when they host their annual Indigenous Heritage Night Thursday at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.
The September 24 game against the Sarnia Sting will feature several special performances and ceremonies both before and during the game.
The Smoke Trail Drum and Dance Group from Alderville First Nation will perform in the Memorial Centre lobby before puck drop and return for an on-ice performance during the first intermission.
Before the game, Curve Lake School will perform the national anthem in Anishinaabemowin.
A ceremonial puck drop will also feature representatives from Alderville First Nation, Curve Lake First Nation, Hiawatha First Nation and game sponsor Crowe’s Gas.
The Petes will once again use a special logo created by Indigenous painter and digital artist Kory Parkin of Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory.
Parkin’s design features Nogojiwanong, the traditional name of Peterborough, along with imagery of a canoe and water representing the area’s connection to the rapids.
Parkin said the design was intended to recognize those who came before and the Indigenous history of the area.
The Petes and Sting hit the ice at 7:05 p.m. Thursday. You can listen on FREQ 90.5.
