Peterborough city council has endorsed receiving a review that identifies between $20.6 million and $30.2 million in potential savings and avoided costs over four years.
The Effectiveness and Efficiency Review, conducted by Ernst & Young LLP (EY), examined city operations to identify opportunities to improve efficiency.
The consulting firm reviewed city-provided data and documents, compared Peterborough with other municipalities, conducted consultations and assessed service demand, staffing and organizational structure.
The review identifies potential changes in several areas, including Peterborough Regional Airport, the Art Gallery of Peterborough, Riverview Park and Zoo, Peterborough Fire Services’ responses to false alarms, sidewalk snow clearing, and organizational structure and staffing.
EY estimates the opportunities could generate cumulative savings or cost avoidance ranging from $20.6 million to $30.2 million over a four-year period.
Those figures are projections, not savings that council has approved or achieved. Separate council decisions would be required to implement the identified opportunities and realize any associated financial benefits.
Council has endorsed receiving the review for information. The report is expected to return as part of the draft 2027 city budget for further consideration.
The city has not announced which opportunities, if any, will be implemented.
