First-time election candidate Rebecca Schillemat is among seven seeking to be Peterborough’s next mayor and now, with the weeks winding down to the October 26th election, she’s working hard to get her message out on a crowded election landscape.
Schillemat says while the number of mayoral candidates is a good thing that provides voters with a choice, she notes her focus has been consistent since day one of her campaign back in early May.
As for what she’s been hearing from residents, be that at their front door or any one of the coffee gatherings she’s hosted, Schillemat says the state of Peterborough’s downtown core is a common refrain.
Besides more canvassing and hosting coffee chats, Schillemat welcomes the opportunity to debate her election opponents.
Schillemat says regardless of the election night outcome, the experience of campaigning has taught her more about the city she loves and made her home.
