Twenty-three local businesses have been selected for the 2026 Starter Company Plus program, giving their owners access to training, mentorship and the opportunity to receive up to $5,000 in grant funding.
Community Futures Peterborough’s Business Advisory Centre announced this year’s participants after receiving nearly 90 applications.
The businesses represent a wide range of industries, including food, retail, manufacturing, personal care and professional services.
Among those selected are Kia Ora Pie Co., PTBO Ballroom, Melange Organics, Fungo Rocker and Owl Fix It Plumbing, a women-owned plumbing company.
“This is truly a life-changing program,” said Rosalea Terry, manager of the Business Advisory Centre and Corporate Communications.
“The quality of applications this year was exceptional. There were so many strong businesses, great ideas, and an incredible drive to grow.”
The 23 participants include 12 businesses from the City of Peterborough, 10 from Peterborough County and one from Curve Lake First Nation.
This fall, business owners will take part in a six-week, in-person program featuring group workshops and individual advisory sessions. The training will focus on refining business strategies, improving marketing and developing skills for long-term growth.
Participants who successfully complete the program will have access to grant funding of up to $5,000 each to help start or expand their businesses.
Bee Pratt, founder of Owl Fix It Plumbing, says she’s proud to be building a women-owned business focused on quality workmanship, honest service and community involvement.
“We are still growing, and excited about what’s ahead!” said Pratt.
Community Futures Peterborough executive director Devon Girard says the organization has been impressed by the quality of applications throughout the three years it has delivered the program.
The province-funded Starter Company Plus initiative is designed to help entrepreneurs establish and grow their businesses through practical training, mentorship, networking and financial support.
Peterborough-Kawartha MPP Dave Smith, Peterborough Mayor Jeff Leal and County Warden Bonnie Clark congratulated the participants, highlighting the role small businesses play in local employment and economic development.
