Lindsay is getting its first Walmart Supercentre, with the retail giant planning to open a new 142,000-square-foot store in 2028.
Walmart Canada announced the store will anchor a new SmartCentres development at Highway 35 and Sylvester Drive in the northwest corner of Lindsay.
The Supercentre is expected to include a full grocery department, general merchandise, a pharmacy and Vision Centre, along with in-store pickup and delivery services.
Kawartha Lakes Mayor Doug Elmslie called the announcement a milestone for the community following years of planning for population and commercial growth.
“We’ve spent years preparing for growth by investing in City infrastructure and working alongside the development community,” said Elmslie.
The City says new residential developments have brought more residents to Lindsay, increasing demand for additional shopping and services and helping attract new commercial investment.
The Walmart and surrounding SmartCentres development are also expected to create local jobs, although an estimated number of positions has not yet been announced.
Paula Bonner, Walmart Canada’s Vice President of Format Development, said the company has heard from residents who have been asking for a location in Lindsay.
“We can’t wait to open our doors and give customers more choice, greater convenience and access to our everyday low prices, including on fresh groceries,” said Bonner.
The Lindsay location is part of Walmart Canada’s $6.5-billion investment to expand its store and supply-chain network across the country.
It is the fifth new Walmart Supercentre announced for Ontario as part of that investment.
The new Lindsay store is expected to open in 2028.
