Drivers will eventually see lower speed limits and new road markings along a section of Park Street North as Peterborough moves ahead with safety improvements to the central-city corridor.
City council has approved changes to Park Street North between Sherbrooke Street and Wolseley Street, including new bike lanes, parking restrictions and reduced speed limits.
Between Wolseley and Charlotte streets, the plan calls for bike lanes with painted buffers separating cyclists from vehicle traffic.
The posted speed limit along that section will be reduced to 40 kilometres per hour, while on-street parking will be restricted.
The City says the changes are also intended to improve pedestrian comfort by providing greater separation between people using sidewalks and moving vehicles.
A different approach will be taken between Charlotte and Sherbrooke streets.
On-street parking will remain along that portion of Park Street North, while new pavement markings will be used to visually designate space. The posted speed limit will be reduced to 30 kilometres per hour.
According to the City, the improvements are intended to make the corridor safer for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians without reducing overall vehicle flow or capacity.
Dedicated cycling space will also help narrow vehicle lanes and provide an additional buffer between moving traffic and pedestrian activity along the curb.
The design and lower posted limits are expected to help reduce vehicle speeds along the corridor.
