With students heading back to class, Peterborough drivers are being reminded to slow down and pay close attention to parking and traffic rules around local schools.
The City says it will continue installing road safety measures in school neighbourhoods aimed at reducing vehicle speeds, limiting traffic conflicts and creating safer spaces for pedestrians.
“Community safety is a priority within school zones, which are some of the busiest areas on our roads,” Mayor Jeff Leal said.
Municipal Law Enforcement Officers will also be focusing on parking regulations during busy school arrival and dismissal periods, including areas marked as no stopping or no parking.
The City says vehicles stopped or parked in restricted areas can block sightlines and create congestion, making it more difficult for children and other pedestrians to safely cross the street.
Drivers are being encouraged to use designated areas when dropping off or picking up students and pay close attention to posted signs.
Motorists are also reminded to watch for school crossing guards and follow their directions.
Drivers must stop when directed by a crossing guard and remain stopped until the guard has returned to the curb and it is safe to proceed.
The City says the combination of lower speeds, responsible parking and attention to crossing guards can help make the return to school safer for students, families and others travelling through school neighbourhoods.
