Peterborough has approved a new four-year plan aimed at addressing issues ranging from homelessness and mental health to public safety and poverty.
City council has approved the Community Safety and Well-being Plan for 2026 through 2030.
The plan identifies eight priority areas for the community: inclusion and belonging, housing and homelessness, poverty and income security, healthcare and mental health, substance use and addictions, children, youth and families, public safety and active transportation.
The document will now be submitted to Ontario’s Solicitor General to meet provincial requirements under the Safer Ontario Act.
Under the legislation, municipalities are required to develop and regularly update Community Safety and Well-being Plans, with Peterborough’s plan due for renewal in July 2026.
The plans are intended to take a broader approach to community safety by identifying local risks and bringing together municipalities, police, healthcare providers and other community organizations to address them.
Peterborough’s updated plan will guide local priorities through 2030.
