If you’re a fan of that big band sound delivered live, you want to be at Peterborough’s Millennium Park on September 12th starting at noon.
The annual Big Band Day will see performances by the Peterborough Concert Band, Knightshift, Electric City Swing and Revelation. Sponsored by the Peterborough Concert Band and Long and McQuade, the free admission event will see gospel, swing, jazz, funk and rock music performed.
Gord Thompson, who plays clarinet with the Peterborough Concert Band as well as saxophone with Knightshift and Electric City Swing, says Big Band Day debuted back 2017 in partnership with the DBIA and has proven increasingly more popular over the years. He adds the event’s musical menu will feature the sound that was very popular back in the day, but will also include a generous helping of more modern selections.
Thompson says those who may be interested in taking up an instrument themselves will have ample opportunity to learn more.
Thompson notes the motto of the American Federation of Musicians, to which he once belonged, was “Live Music Is Best.” He says that holds true to this day.
Big Band Day will be held rain or shine. Those planning to attend are encouraged to bring a chair as seating is very limited.
