When voters go to the polls in October to elect a mayor, Jeff Leal’s name will not be on the ballot.
Leal, who has spent nearly 40 years combined in public life between the municipal and provincial levels, announced on Thursday he will not be seeking another term at City Hall.
Leal revealed he’s slated for knee surgery coming up and that he had to be realistic about his age and ability to work the way he’s accustomed.
Looking back at his term in the mayor’s chair, Leal says he believes they’ve charted the right course for the city.
So what does the next chapter hold? Leal says family time will be a focus but also has some other ideas.
The deadline for candidates to register for the Municipal Election is on Friday and at this point there are six who have stepped forward for mayor: Keith Riel, Neil Morton, Dr. Michael Eamon, Rebecca Schillemat, Jacob Méthot and Brian Lumsden.
