Jessica Correa has withdrawn her candidacy for Peterborough City Council in Otonabee Ward, citing a conflict between continuing her campaign and her professional responsibilities.
Correa announced the decision in a statement to supporters, saying a concern about her candidacy was raised with her employer several weeks ago, leading to a more formal policy review.
“Ultimately, after a few heartbreaking weeks, I was advised that continuing my candidacy was no longer considered compatible with my current professional responsibilities,” Correa said.
She said she had worked to find a way to continue both her career and council campaign but was unable to find a compatible path.
Correa said protecting her career, family and health were three commitments she made to herself when deciding to seek municipal office.
“I won’t pretend this doesn’t hurt. It hurts beyond what I can explain,” she said.
Correa said she had already purchased election signs and had been actively campaigning, including holding Picnic in the Park events, canvassing residents and gathering feedback about issues including homelessness, infrastructure, public safety, affordability and economic development.
Despite leaving the race, Correa said she intends to remain involved in Peterborough after taking a break from community work.
“Withdrawing from this election does not mean withdrawing from Peterborough,” she said. “This is still my community. I still believe deeply in its potential.”
Correa also thanked residents, volunteers, donors and supporters who had participated in her campaign.
