A 17-year-old from Mariposa Township has died after a canoe capsized on Cross Lake in Hastings County.
Ontario Provincial Police say officers from the Bancroft detachment responded to a marine distress call shortly after 1:30 p.m. on Monday involving a capsized canoe.
A large search effort followed, involving Whitney Paramedic Services, Renfrew County Paramedic Services and its SIERRA Team, OPP Aviation Services, local residents and police officers.
Members of the OPP’s Underwater Search and Recovery Unit later located the missing individual, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police have identified the victim as a 17-year-old male from Mariposa Township.
A postmortem examination will be conducted.
The OPP has not released any additional details about the circumstances surrounding the incident.
